Draft1Managed Services
SOE Vs MOE

The theory and technology of Managed Services continues to evolve. Traditionally, Managed Services have been about delivering a Standard or Single Operating Environment (SOE) to all users, and allowing a few special cases to do their own thing. Today, the cost to support Multiple Operating Environments (MOE) does not cost a lot more.

The advantages of MOE are that all the special cases can now be catagorised and MANAGED properly. The special cases were often senior executives;

  • who often had the most sensitive information on their machines so the consequence of data loss or corruption was high,
  • and who often accessed the internet outside the office environment at hotels and wi-fi cafes, these are high risk locations

The combination of high risk and high probability means that these are the computers in the organisation that should have the HIGHEST level of management rather than laissez-faire that occurs because services find it difficult to educate and accommodate special cases.
